A comfortable bed is an absolute necessity for peaceful sleep. But with the many mattresses and mattress toppers available these days, selecting the perfect one for yourself could get tricky. So we decided to learn about one type that has been gaining traction on social media: the egg crate mattress topper.
What is it?
An egg crate topper, also known as an egg crate mattress pad, is a bedding accessory designed to enhance comfort and support for a mattress or sleeping surface. It is named after its distinct design, which resembles the shape of an egg carton. “This topper is typically made of foam, though some variations may include memory or gel-infused foam for added benefits. The unique texture provides cushioning and airflow, helping to improve the overall sleep experience,” said Tushar Joshi, founder, Utkarsh Vastukaran.
Benefits
Enhanced comfort: The raised, uneven surface helps distribute body weight more evenly, reducing pressure points on areas such as shoulders, hips, and back.
Improved air circulation: The valleys and ridges of the topper promote better airflow, which can help regulate body temperature and reduce overheating during sleep.
Cost-effective: Compared to purchasing a new mattress, “an egg crate topper is an affordable way to enhance comfort and extend the life of an existing mattress,” said Vastukaran.
Portability: Lightweight and easy to roll up, “these toppers are convenient for travel or use in dormitories, hospitals, or temporary accommodations.”

Is it compulsory to use an egg crate topper?
Vastukaran noted that using an egg crate topper is not mandatory and that its necessity depends on individual preferences and needs. “If your mattress is too firm or uncomfortable, an egg crate topper can provide an inexpensive solution for added cushioning and support. It is also a good choice for individuals seeking temporary comfort enhancements, such as guests or people recovering from surgery,” said Vastukaran.

However, those with specific health concerns, like chronic back pain, might benefit from investing in more specialised options, such as orthopedic or memory foam toppers. Furthermore, if your mattress is too old or sagging, replacing it altogether might be a better investment, Vastukaran said.
While an egg crate topper is a practical and budget-friendly bedding accessory, “its use is optional and depends on your personal comfort needs.”
