LaVar Ball's lawsuit has added another challenge for the outspoken basketball personality just days after he revealed the end of his 30-year marriage to Tina Ball. According to court records, Ball is being sued by contractor MD Steel Inc.
, which alleges he failed to pay more than $221,000 for the construction of a basketball court and additional renovations at his California home. The legal dispute comes during a busy week for the Ball family, with LaMelo Ball making headlines following his blockbuster trade from the Charlotte Hornets to the Minnesota Timberwolves. While the younger Ball's future has shifted on the court, his father's attention has turned toward an increasingly public legal battle.
What is LaVar Ball's lawsuit about?
The lawsuit centers on renovation work completed at Ball's Chino Hills mansion, where MD Steel Inc. says it installed a private basketball court and carried out additional home improvements.According to the complaint, the total cost of the project exceeded $970,000, per TMZ. Court filings allege Ball paid approximately $754,391 but never settled the remaining balance of $221,928. The contractor is now asking the court to recover the outstanding amount.
The dispute first came to light through court documents obtained by multiple outlets, placing renewed attention on Ball's residence, an eight-bedroom, 11-bathroom property spanning more than 15,000 square feet. The home has appeared in several online videos over recent months. During a house tour with Kiya Studios published in March, Ball showcased the indoor basketball court while construction work was still ongoing.
He also highlighted different areas of the property during a livestream with YouTuber N3on.The mansion itself carries added significance within the Ball family's story. Rather than purchasing the property himself, LaVar received the home from his eldest son, Lonzo Ball, after the former UCLA standout was selected by the Los Angeles Lakers with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft. The lawsuit does not involve any of Ball's sons, whose basketball careers have continued to evolve.
Lonzo remains in the NBA after injuries interrupted several seasons, while LiAngelo Ball has pursued opportunities in professional basketball and music. LaMelo, meanwhile, recently became the centerpiece of a blockbuster trade that sent the former NBA Rookie of the Year to the Minnesota Timberwolves.

The lawsuit surfaced shortly after Ball publicly disclosed another major personal development.Appearing on a podcast with YouTuber N3on, Ball revealed that he and Tina Ball have separated after approximately three decades of marriage. The couple built one of basketball's most recognizable families while raising Lonzo, LiAngelo and LaMelo, all of whom reached professional basketball. Tina largely remained out of the spotlight in recent years after suffering a serious stroke in 2017, while LaVar continued making regular media appearances. With legal proceedings now underway and no public response filed regarding the contractor's allegations, Ball faces another off-court chapter at a time when the spotlight on the family remains firmly fixed.
