What is the classy UAE escape that expats are eyeing to escape the 'Dubai depression'

Expats are ditching Dubai's glitz for Ras Al Khaimah, seeking a calmer life. Dubbed the 'nature emirate,' RAK offers stunning beaches and mountains without the high costs and burnout of its neighbour. There is an endless weight of influencers, sky-high bills, and burnout - what some call the "Dubai Depression.

"Now, savvy expats are skipping the chaos altogether, heading straight to a neighbour that's got all the perks without the pretension. Amid pristine beaches, jagged mountains, and a laid-back rhythm that lets you breathe.

What is the classy escape from ‘Dubai depression’?

Dubai dazzles with glamour, but expats often gripe about its soulless vibe, influencer overload, gruelling hours, and steep living costs, earning it the tag "Dubai Depression."

Now, many bolt to neighbouring Ras Al Khaimah (RAK), an hour north and billed as the "nature emirate" with 42 miles of Arabian Gulf shoreline. It's gaining popularity as an alternative, minus Dubai's overtourism and bling.

British expat details the ‘natural luxuries’ away from Dubai’s rush

British expat and entrepreneur Ben Moss, who documents life in RAK on TikTok (@mr_moss_media), talks of the change. "It used to be that the British would move to Dubai first then later move to Ras Al Khaimah, whereas now they're interested in moving directly here," he said in a recent video.

He raves about kayaking on empty beaches and living at Al Qawasim Corniche, calling it the UAE's best spot for real affordability and opportunities.

Why is the place gaining popularity?

Everyday expenses are far lesser in comparison to those in Dubai. Utilities run about £90 monthly (around ₹9,500) versus £129 (around ₹13,600) in Dubai, and a one-bed apartment costs £576 (approximately ₹60,800), compared to Dubai's £1,700+ (over ₹1.79 lakh) city-centre rates.

However, salaries lag, with RAK's £1,300 average (around ₹1.37 lakh) versus Dubai's £3,000 (about ₹3.16 lakh), but the trade-off has attracted many to this UAE paradise.Residents love the stellar weather, cheap schools, and "crystal-clean water," as @dilshod_anvar shares on social media. Framed by dunes, the Hajar Mountains, and wild coasts, RAK feels extravagant yet grounded.

Luxury stays abound but minus the selfie crowds

Upcoming spots include Sajj A Mantis Collection Mountain Lodge, Hilton Marjan Island Beach Resort & Spa's sky pool, JW Marriott Al Marjan Island, built in 2026, and Le Meridien Marjan Island.
