After placing centre David Kampf on suspension without pay, the Toronto Maple Leafs have again come up with another update amid a goaltending shuffle. The Maple Leafs have officially placed goaltender Cayden Primeau on waivers, as per reports citing NHL insider Chris Johnston. According to early reports, Primeau was acquired via waivers earlier this season, as the Maple Leafs looked to bolster their goal depth, while veteran goaltender Joseph Woll continued to be unavailable. At the time of the waiver placement, Primeau had appeared in three games for Toronto, posting a 2-1-0 record but struggling with a 4.30 goals-against average and an .838 save percentage. However, upon goalie Joseph Woll’s return to the organization after taking a leave of absence for personal reasons, the team has to make this call.
The real reason behind placing Cayden Primeau on waivers
The Toronto Maple Leafs have placed goaltender Cayden Primeau on waivers. The move was first reported by TSN’s Chris Johnston on Thursday, and it comes as the team’s goalie depth chart continues to evolve with the return of Joseph Woll and the steady play of newcomer Anthony Stolarz. The decision to put Primeau on waivers appears driven by two key factors. The first being, with Joseph Woll now cleared to rejoin the team following his personal leave, his presence reduces the urgency for Primeau as the backup netminder.
While Primeau showed promise, his recent outing, six goals allowed on 24 shots in a start, has raised questions about his readiness for a sustained NHL role.

Reports suggest that Toronto general manager Brad Treliving had little choice but to expose him to waivers if the organization hoped to send him to the AHL’s Toronto Marlies. As for his performance, the 6-foot-3 Primeau appeared in net three times for the Maple Leafs, going 2-1-0 with a 4.30 goals-against average and an .838 save percentage. He was drafted 199th overall by the Montreal Canadiens and has a career 15-25-7 record with a 3.73 GAA and an .882 save percentage split between the Canadiens and Maple Leafs.Meanwhile, Toronto is placed in fourth place in the Atlantic Division with an 8-5-1 record and has back-to-back games over the weekend, where they will face the Boston Bruins on Saturday and the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday. Also read: NHL insider Chris Johnston updates on David Kampf's suspension from Maple Leafs' affiliate without pay | NHL News - The Times of India
