What led everyone to believe Odell Beckham Jr. was retiring?

Social media post interpretation is a double-edged sword. One post can lead to so many unwanted interpretations - Like Odell Beckham Jr.’s recent Instagram post. The 32-year-old wide receiver, who last played for the Miami Dolphins, shared a series of snapshots on his Instagram.

The post contained a total of seventeen snapshots! Now, a fake X account of a renowned NFL Insider, Adam Schefter, supposedly concluded from Beckham Jr.’s seventeen snapshots that he was retiring. The fake X account said that Odell was retiring. This wasn’t the case. His seventeen snapshots were not going to put a lid on his NFL career. An IG user even commented on the post, clearing the air, “I hate when you post this every preseason hahahahaga.”

But somehow, the post led everyone to believe Odell Beckham Jr.

The former wide receiver for the Baltimore Ravens captioned these seventeen snapshots as: “I just been in the cuts getting it in… gotta write the ending to my own story. Gods plan.” Following this caption and the series of snapshots, a fake account of Adam Schefter released a retirement rumor via X on August 12.

It read: “After 10 seasons in the NFL, Odell Beckham Jr. has decided to retire. Beckham Jr. played for the Giants, Browns, Rams, Ravens, and Dolphins.

He announced Tuesday.” It amassed 4 million views! Over 1K comments, 5.2K reposts, 74K likes, and 1.5K bookmarks. How did the fans react to this fake announcement?

Fans aired their views on hearing about Odell Beckham Jr.’s retirement news

One fan felt sympathetic for Odell, saying, “Bro loved playing in NY and we let him go for peanuts.” Another fan questioned: “Was Odell Beckham overrated?” A third fan supposedly summed up his 10-year-long career, “His career consists of one great catch, a whack hairstyle, and tantrums on the sidelines LOL.”

A fourth fan went back in time and blamed the Browns, “Cleveland f**ked his Career up.” The wideout played for them for three seasons - from 2019 to 2021.

A fifth fan commented, “Most overrated overhyped player in recent history.”

A day later, after his retirement rumors had run amok, on August 13, Beckham Jr., a former wide receiver for the Los Angeles Rams, wrote on his X: “No seriously. Plz stop reading everything on the internet, and stop texting me happy retirement b4 u piss me off 😭😭😭. That will get no response. I promise u the day I’m done I will let u kno. Again if u text me happy retirement im just gon have to block u😭😭.
