As open-concept floor plans took away the sovereignty of the room where meals were lovingly cooked, shared mealtimes also came to an end. It’s hard to recreate that magic out of pre-cooked food
Two generations ago the annual family holiday was not to Cannes or Disneyland. We did not fly off into the wild blue yonder. It was a train ride or a drive direct to the grandparents’ home.
Days spent there were made really memorable by the great food on the table, what with aunts, uncles, cousins spicing the dishes with reams of
suna thha
 gossip. It so delightfully stitched up the family patchwork quilt. There was genuine conversation and care.
Just as those leisurely lunches and dramatic dinners were the adhesives that kept the larger family together, the kitchen was the powerhouse of the home. It was functional and warm and joyous and its offerings were made with lashings of love spiked with the depth of tradition. 
Life literally happened in the kitchen and from the kitchen.
