Mahalaya Amavasya 2025: Significance

For Hindus, Amavasya holds an immense religious and spiritual importance.

It is known as Mahalaya Amavasya when it falls during Pitru Paksha. It is regarded as a significant day, when people give farewell to their departed loved ones and carry out various rituals. This Amavasya is also known as Sarva Pitri Amavasya, Pitra Moksha Amavasya, and Pitru Amavasya. The nine-day Navratri season, which is devoted to worshiping Goddess Durga, begins just after Amavasya.

One of the most important Amavasya is Mahalaya Amavasya, when people undertake several puja ceremonies to ask their ancestors for blessings.

Along with dakshina, some individuals also call brahmins to conduct pind daan and pitru tarpan and provide them with food, clothing, and other offerings. If the Pitru is suffering from the Pitru Dosha, Pind daan should be done for the salvation of their soul.

Mahalaya Amavasya 2025: Puja Rituals

1. Before beginning puja rituals, get up early and take a holy bath.2. First, clean the house and offer arghya to Lord Surya.3. Prepare sattvik food and invite Brahmins at your house.4. Make that brahmin on the floor and the eldest male member of the family will perform Pitru Tarpan.5. On this auspicious day, it is considered meritorious to feed cows, dogs, ants, and crows.6. A male family member must offer food, clothing, and dakshina to the brahmins after finishing all the puja rituals.7. Family members are allowed to eat once the Brahmin bhoj is finished.
