When Padma Shri honouree late Satish Shah got frustrated with Shah Rukh Khan during 'Main Hoon Na' shoot; Needed eight retakes

Padma Shri recipient Satish Shah was posthumously honoured with one of India's highest civilian awards in 2026 for his contribution to Indian cinema and entertainment. Veteran actor Satish Shah once looked back on one of the most memorable experiences from the sets of 'Main Hoon Na'.

The actor recalled how a comedy sequence involving Shah Rukh Khan became unexpectedly challenging because repeated retakes were required.Speaking in an earlier interview with Bollywood Bubble, Satish opened up about filming the popular classroom scenes in the 2004 blockbuster. While the sequence eventually became a fan favourite, shooting it proved far more difficult than it appeared on screen. The actor explained that the scene required precise timing and considerable effort, making every retake more demanding.

The spitting scene

Satish revealed that the scene involved holding water in his mouth and spraying it while delivering dialogue. Although he managed to perform the sequence successfully, the shot repeatedly had to be redone because Shah Rukh Khan would burst into laughter. The actor recalled that one particular classroom sequence ended up requiring multiple takes. What started as a routine shoot soon became a test of patience.Sharing the incident, Satish said, "Shah Rukh badme hass deta tha toh retake ho jata tha.

Aise 8 retakes ek baar huye wo classroom me. Main fir bhadak gaya, maine kaha ki main iske baad nahi karunga and everyone is laughing, they are falling off the chair and I think it is there in one of the YouTube videos. Then I gave another shot and waha pe bhi usne hass diya tha so they had to insert Zayed Khan’s scene kyuki waha bhi usne hass diya tha.

It was very difficult to keep a straight face and do these things but hota hai aisa sab," ("Shah Rukh would start laughing afterwards, and that meant we had to do another retake.

Once, we ended up doing eight retakes in the classroom scene. I eventually lost my temper and said I wasn't going to do it anymore. Everyone on the set was laughing and literally falling off their chairs. I think that footage is even available in one of the YouTube videos. Then I gave another shot, but he laughed again there as well, so they had to insert Zayed Khan's scene because Shah Rukh laughed in that take too. It was very difficult to keep a straight face and perform those scenes, but these things happen.")

Despite the frustration, the actor later remembered the experience with humour.

Satish Shah initially wanted a different character

During the same conversation, Satish disclosed that he originally had his eyes on another role in the film. He was interested in portraying the principal, a character that was eventually played by Boman Irani. However, discussions with Shah Rukh Khan and director

Farah Khan

changed his mind. They encouraged him to take on the eccentric professor role that would later become one of the film's standout comic performances.

The actor admitted that he was unsure at first about how he would approach the character.Satish revealed that both Shah Rukh and Farah strongly believed he was the right choice for the role. Their confidence ultimately persuaded him to accept the character. Recalling those conversations, he said, "Shah Rukh then said, 'Satish bhai aise role toh aapne kayi baar kiya hai aur koi bhi kar sakta hai. I think you should this role because we can’t think of anybody else doing it.’

Wo aur Farah dono ne mujhe channe ke jhaad mein chadha diya.

That’s how I ended up doing that role but it was not easy because maine socha ki ye kaise kiya jaaye," ("Shah Rukh then told me, 'Satish bhai, you've played roles like that many times before, and anyone can do them. I think you should do this role because we can't imagine anyone else playing it.' Both he and Farah really persuaded me and boosted my confidence. That's how I ended up taking the role. But it wasn't easy, because I kept wondering how I was going to pull it off.")

A character that remains popular even today

Released in 2004, 'Main Hoon Na' marked Farah Khan's directorial debut and emerged as one of the biggest hits of the year. The film featured Shah Rukh Khan, Sushmita Sen, Zayed Khan, Amrita Rao and Suniel Shetty in pivotal roles.
