India skipper Shubman Gill is having the proverbial baptism by fire moment with his first assignment as the India red ball leader being the ongoing England tour. The 25-year-old has shown his mettle as a batter in this series with 4 centuries, becoming only the 3rd captain after Sir Donald Bradman and Sunil Gavaskar to achieve 4 tons in a series.

Asked recently on which one was his favourite, Gill picked the ton he scored in Manchester on Sunday which kept India in the hunt for a draw after they had lost Sai Sudharsan and Yasahsvi Jaiswal for ducks at the start of the innings.

“I think this inning of mine was the most pleasing to me,” Gill said in an interaction with BCCI.tv.

The skipper also acknowledged the support he got from KL Rahul who missed his century by just 10 runs and also the gritty 100s by Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar who dragged the match to a draw and kept the series alive at 2-1 heading to the Oval.

“To be able to have that same mindset for 140 overs is very difficult, and that is what differentiates a good team from a great team, and I think we showed that today, that is why we are a great team,” Gill said.

“Zero for two and then the partnership between me and KL bhai, I think that’s what ignited the belief that yes, we can achieve this task. Extremely, extremely happy. To be able to get a draw from the position that we were in yesterday is extremely satisfying,” he added.

Festive offer

“When Jaddu bhai and Washy were batting, it was not easy. The ball was doing something but the way they both batted, so calmly.. and to be able to get a Test century from there is when you realise how big an achievement it is,” Gill lauded his teammates.
