New Delhi: The police team investigating Tuesday night’s hit-and-run in south Delhi’s Greater Kailash I suspects that a white Ciaz car knocked down the motorbike of a 41-year-old man, who was killed.Local people told police that a Ciaz was seen speeding through the neighborhood around the time of the accident. Witnesses said the vehicle was moving at a high speed and had exited the open main gate of the locality. One local, who requested anonymity, said the last four digits of the vehicle’s number plate, as seen in CCTV footage of a residence, was 8177. This could provide a potential lead to investigators. He also added that the number plate of the car indicated it was registered in Delhi.Police sources added that the car was seen heading towards the Archana red light side. The police are reviewing CCTV footage from nearby cameras and questioning witnesses to reconstruct the sequence of events.Outside the Greater Kailash police station was the mangled motorcycle of the 41-year-old man who had died. The front was badly damaged, the headlight shattered and wires were hanging out. The front was bent and twisted, and the number plate askew.
“The impact of the collision indicates that the car was being driven at a very high speed, as the front part of the victim’s bike was heavily damaged,” an officer said.Police suspect the accused was familiar with the area. They are also speaking to residents to determine if any parties were held on Tuesday or if any new visitors were seen around the time of the incident.A case under sections 281 (rash driving), 125(a) (endangering life), and 106(1) (causing death by negligence) of BNS has been filed. The victim, Surendra Das, was out in the rain to buy bread. He had worked as a cook and house help at the home of an elderly couple for over two decades in GK I’s B block.Local people said a white sedan hit Das’ motorcycle around 8 pm.Rajindra (58), a guard and eyewitness, said: “I heard a loud crash and rushed out. A crowd of 20 to 25 people had gathered, surrounding him as he lay unconscious on the road.”A cardiologist who lives nearby tried to revive Das before he was rushed to a nearby hospital in an ambulance. He was declared dead at the hospital. Das had serious head injuries as the impact of the hit had flung him three to four feet away.Outside the AIIMS mortuary on Wednesday morning, his wife Meena Devi clutched their son Amit and cried: “How will I raise my three children alone?” His younger brother, Nilesh Kumar (26) added, “We only want the accused to be traced and strictly punished.”Das, from Bihar’s Madhubani district, was the sole breadwinner for his wife and three children -- Preeti, Amit and Ritesh.
The family lived in Zamrudpur.Loved ones described him as a man who was devoted to his family, someone who wanted to give his children a better future. Meena said the family had gone to the Khatu Shyam temple last month. A few weeks before that, they made a trip to Ayodhya. They were planning a trip to Mathura and Haridwar in summer. “He was always thinking about the children and where to take them next,” she said.Recalling their last interaction, she said: “He offered to pick me up from the metro station and drop me home around 6 pm since it was raining, but I told him to go to work because he was getting late.
He asked me to take care of myself.”Residents remembered Das more as part of a family. They spoke about his warmth, his attachment to Coco, the dog he had cared for, and his love for cricket. “There was always commentary playing because of him. It feels silent now,” an elderly resident said.Another woman recalled that they suggested ordering groceries online that evening due to the rain, but Das insisted the shop was close by and went himself. The gated society is lined with CCTV cameras outside almost every house. The lane where the crash hapened is narrow, with cars parked on both sides and barely enough space for a single four-wheeler to pass. There are houses on one side and a park on the other. Some friends of Das suspect the driver may have been a local, while others believe the car may have entered from outside to visit a dark spot in the neighbourhood. “It was him today. It could be anyone tomorrow,” a senior citizen close to Das said.
