The Western Hockey League (WHL) has announced major disciplinary actions against two prominent team officials, signaling its commitment to accountability and player welfare.

Swift Current Broncos coach Dean DeSilva and Lethbridge Hurricanes GM Peter Anholt were both suspended following separate investigations into violations of the league’s standards of conduct. These measures emphasize the WHL’s zero-tolerance approach to unprofessional behavior.DeSilva received a five-game suspension and a $10,000 fine after two on-ice incidents, one during a 4-0 loss to the Prince Albert Raiders and another at a team practice.

Meanwhile, Anholt was suspended from November 14 through November 25 and fined $10,000 for using intimidating language and behavior during a post-game address to his players following an 8-5 defeat to the Edmonton Oil Kings. Both situations were reported through the WHL’s confidential 1-800 Respect line, allowing players and staff to safely report concerns.

In DeSilva’s case, the WHL had initially suspended him indefinitely on November 5 to investigate the practice incident.

The suspension has now been fully served, and he is eligible to return to coaching duties. Anholt, meanwhile, acknowledged that his conduct fell short of expectations and expressed commitment to higher standards moving forward. During his absence, senior advisor Barclay Parneta will handle GM responsibilities for the Hurricanes.

The league’s decisive action underscores the WHL’s ongoing dedication to maintaining professionalism and protecting the well-being of everyone involved, sending a clear message that misconduct will not be tolerated.

The WHL has also implemented remedial measures, including additional education, enhanced monitoring, and preventative initiatives to foster a positive environment for all teams. WHL commissioner Dan Near emphasized, “Accountability is a cornerstone of the WHL’s culture. The league holds all members to clear and consistent standards of conduct, ensuring integrity and player safety are always protected.”Both the Broncos and Hurricanes are struggling in the WHL Eastern Conference, with Swift Current holding a 7-11-1 record and Lethbridge at 6-14-1. These suspensions serve as a reminder that professional conduct is critical at every level, and the league will continue enforcing standards to maintain a safe and respectful environment.More coverage on NHL:Connor Bedard taking over NHL: Chicago Blackhawks’ teen sensation breaking records before 21Lane Hutson breaks through NHL records: Canadiens’ young defenseman hits 75 assists in 100 gamesMatthew and Brady Tkachuk announce ‘Wingmen’ podcast; NHL’s brother duo joins player-led podcast trend like Kelce brothers’ “New Heights”Auston Matthews suffers lower-body injury after Nikita Zadorov hit; Maple Leafs team reacts strongly
