Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan has been elected as the new Vice President of India, securing a decisive win for the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
The announcement came on Tuesday after the vice-presidential election results were declared, marking another political milestone for the ruling coalition. The victory followed weeks of strategy and coordination, with the BJP’s parliamentary board, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, steering the campaign.
With Radhakrishnan’s elevation, the NDA has further consolidated its influence across key constitutional positions.
Who Is Radhakrishnan?
CP Radhakrishnan took the oath as Governor of Maharashtra on July 31, 2024. Prior to his posting in Mumbai, he had served as Governor of Jharkhand for close to one and a half years, according to the Maharashtra Raj Bhavan website.
In a post on X, Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Radhakrishnan’s record, saying he has consistently focused on empowering the marginalised and has “distinguished himself with dedication, humility and intellect." The Prime Minister also noted Radhakrishnan’s extensive work in Tamil Nadu and said he was pleased that the NDA family had decided to nominate him as its vice-presidential pick.
Born on October 20, 1957, in Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu, the Maharashtra Governor holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. He has long associations with the RSS and, in 1974, served as a State Executive Committee member of the Bharatiya Jan Sangh. Radhakrishnan hails from the influential Gounder community, classified as an OBC group in Tamil Nadu.
Before moving to Raj Bhavan in Jharkhand, he led the BJP’s Tamil Nadu unit as state president from 2004 to 2007. The OBC leader has also twice represented the people in the Lok Sabha, adding parliamentary experience to his organisational roles.
Beyond politics, Radhakrishnan’s profile on the Maharashtra Governor’s website highlights his interest in sports. He was a college table tennis champion and a long-distance runner, and he enjoys cricket and volleyball.
