Lieutenant General (Retd.) Syed Ata Hasnain has been appointed as the Governor of Bihar. A decorated former officer of the Indian Army, Hasnain is widely known for his role in counter-insurgency operations and strategic leadership during his military career.
Early Life And Education
Hasnain studied at Sherwood College in Nainital before pursuing higher education at the University of Delhi. During his professional career, he also attended the Royal College of Defence Studies in London and the Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies in Hawaii, strengthening his expertise in defence and strategic affairs.
Military Career
Hasnain was commissioned into the 4th Battalion of the Garhwal Rifles in 1974 after graduating from the Indian Military Academy.
Over nearly four decades in the army, he held several key command roles, particularly in Jammu and Kashmir. One of his most notable assignments was commanding the 15 Corps (Chinar Corps) in Srinagar, which oversees military operations in the Kashmir Valley.
He later went on to command the 21 Corps, one of the Indian Army’s strike formations, and also served as Military Secretary at Army Headquarters before retiring in 2013.
Military Honours
During his distinguished service, Hasnain received several prestigious awards, including the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM), Uttam Yudh Seva Medal (UYSM), Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) and the Sena Medal (SM).
Role After Retirement
After retiring from the army, Hasnain continued to engage in academic and strategic initiatives. In 2018, he was appointed Chancellor of the Central University of Kashmir, where he worked on strengthening higher education in the region.
He has also been active as a commentator on national security and geopolitical issues.
New Constitutional Role
With his appointment as Governor of Bihar, Hasnain joins a group of former senior military officers who have taken on constitutional roles in India after distinguished careers in the armed forces.
