A senior officer in Uttar Pradesh’s administrative services has found herself at the centre of a political and bureaucratic storm. Nikita Sharma, the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Sadar, Muzaffarnagar, is facing serious allegations of corruption from none other than a Cabinet Minister in the state government. The controversy has triggered ripples in the district’s power corridors and raised questions about internal accountability.
Cabinet Minister Anil Kumar has formally accused SDM Nikita Sharma of facilitating illegal land plotting in collusion with land mafias. In a letter addressed to the state government, Kumar claimed that the officer’s actions directly violate the Yogi Adityanath government’s much-publicised zero-tolerance policy towards corruption. He further asserted that public officials must remain answerable and transparent in their dealings, warning that those who indulge in malpractice will not be spared.
Following the minister’s complaint, the state government has directed Muzaffarnagar District Magistrate Umesh Mishra to initiate a formal enquiry. An investigation is currently underway at the district level, and a report is expected soon.
SDM Nikita Sharma, however, has strongly refuted the charges. “I have not received any such letter, nor has anyone contacted me regarding an enquiry," she told reporters. Further dismissing the claims as politically motivated, Sharma said that the allegations were baseless and had been circulating without evidence since January.
Nikita Sharma’s career in the Uttar Pradesh bureaucracy began in April 2021. A native of Haryana, she was born on March 31, 1995, and graduated before clearing the state PCS exam in 2020. Her first posting was as Deputy Collector in Shamli, where she served until July 2023. She was then transferred to Muzaffarnagar, where she currently holds the post of SDM Sadar.
In May 2025, Sharma made headlines after leading a high-profile anti-encroachment drive using bulldozers to clear illegal constructions on government land, a move that drew both public appreciation and controversy.
This isn’t the first time Sharma has been embroiled in a public spat. In an earlier episode, Samajwadi Party MP Harendra Malik accused her of ignoring calls related to public grievances. His written complaint against the SDM, alleging unresponsiveness, went viral on social media at the time, sparking a debate on bureaucratic accountability.
