The suspect who opened fire at a US Army base in Georgia has been arrested, according to the Associated Press. He has been identified as 28-year-old Quornelius Samentrio Radford, an acting army sergeant.

Initial reports from Georgia indicate that Radford used a personal handgun, not a military-issued firearm. However, the motive behind the shooting remains unclear at this time.

Radford serves as an automated logistics sergeant assigned to the 2nd Brigade Combat Team. According to NBC, he has no known combat history. It has also emerged that Radford was arrested in May for driving under the influence (DUI). However, Brigadier General John Lubas, commander of the 3rd Infantry Division, confirmed during a press briefing on Wednesday that Radford’s chain of command was unaware of the DUI arrest until after the shooting.

“I do believe he was arrested locally for a DUI. That was unknown to his chain of command until the event occurred and we started looking into the law enforcement databases," Lubas said.

Military officials have so far found no reports of behavioural red flags prior to the incident. “It’s early in the investigation, but not that I’m currently aware of," Lubas added. He also confirmed that Radford has been stationed at Fort Stewart since 2022, with no prior combat deployments or disciplinary history in the Army.

The shooting took place around 10:56 am local time on Wednesday at Fort Stewart, near Hinesville. Radford opened fire near the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team (2ABCT) area, wounding five fellow soldiers. Following the attack, the base was placed on lockdown at approximately 11:04 am. Radford was apprehended by 11:35 am, and the lockdown was lifted within an hour.

The wounded soldiers are reported to be out of danger. Some were treated at the scene before being transferred to Winn Army Community Hospital, according to a Facebook post from base officials. Others were taken to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, spokesperson Bryna Gordon said.
