At a time when award-winning film director Mira Nair’s 33-year-old son Zohran Mamdani has been shaking up a few Americans ahead of the New York City mayor elections, it is also his personal life that has everyone’s attention. When a political leader meets his partner via a dating app, it is meant to make headlines, especially connecting with the Gen-Z population.

Democratic candidate for New York’s mayoral elections, Zohran Mamdani, has become an internet sensation, showing that a politician’s love life does not need to be scandalous all the time. While it is a known fact that the politician’s wife, Rama Duwaji, the 27-year-old multimedia artist, will be the one by his side if he wins the elections, internet users have been more curious about her background and their love story for a while now.

Who Is Rama Duwaji?

According to the BBC, Rama Duwaji is a New York-based artist with her roots in Syria, as her work mainly explores Middle Eastern themes. They have also appeared on various news outlets as well as London’s Tate Modern Museum. “Rama isn’t just my wife; she’s an incredible artist who deserves to be known on her own terms," Mamdani wrote in a May 12 post, announcing their wedding.

Having been away from her husband’s primary election campaign, Duwaji’s professional work has gained her fame. She graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University before earning a master’s degree in illustration from the School of Visual Arts in New York City. “Using drawn portraiture and movement, Rama examines the nuances of sisterhood and communal experiences," her professional website states.

Speaking about her work, much of it is in black and white and depicts scenes from Arab culture. Speaking with Yung Mea in April this year, Duwaji shared, “These days, I focus on making art about my experiences and the things I care about, and the community that forms from conversations about my work — both online and in person — happens organically. I make my work for people who care about the things I care about."

Zohran Mamdani, Rama Duwaji’s Love Story

Coming to her relationship, Democratic candidate Zoran Mandani and Rama Duwaji met on the dating app Hinge. They reportedly got engaged in October 2024 and finally got married in a civil ceremony in early 2025.

“Three months ago, I married the love of my life, Rama, at the City Clerk’s office. Now, right-wing trolls are trying to make this race—which should be about you—about her," Mamdani wrote on Instagram.

Hailing from Syria, Duwaji currently lives in Texas with her family.
