Siddhant Awasthi, the Indian executive who led Tesla’s Cybertruck programme, has announced his departure from the Elon Musk-led electric car giant after eight years with the company.
Awasthi, who also oversaw aspects of the Model 3 programme, shared the announcement on LinkedIn, describing the decision as “one of the hardest" of his life. He did not disclose his future plans but reflected on his journey at Tesla with gratitude and pride.
“I never dreamed I’d one day have the opportunity to lead the Cybertruck program and bring it to reality," he wrote. “It’s been an absolute privilege filled with mostly high-intensity days—working alongside talented, driven, and truly rockstar colleagues across Tesla."
Who Is Siddhant Awasthi?
Starting his career at Tesla as an intern, Awasthi quickly rose through the ranks, taking on key roles in the ramp-up of the Model 3, contributing to the Shanghai Gigafactory, and developing new electronics and wireless architectures.
By his late twenties, he was at the helm of one of Tesla’s most high-profile projects: the Cybertruck, a bold, futuristic electric pickup truck that has captured global attention.
Under his leadership, the Cybertruck reached production milestones, despite the vehicle facing multiple regulatory recalls.
Last month, Tesla recalled more than 63,000 Cybertrucks in the United States due to front lights that were deemed too bright, posing a potential hazard to other drivers. Earlier in the year, regulators had recalled nearly all Cybertrucks on the road over a panel issue that could detach while driving.
In his farewell message, Awasthi highlighted the intensity and excitement of working on Tesla’s vehicles, which he described as “incredibly complex systems" that often go unrecognised for the safety and value they provide. He expressed confidence in Tesla’s future, noting the company’s ongoing growth and innovation.
Reflecting on his eight-year journey, Awasthi said, “Ramping up Model 3, working on Giga Shanghai, developing new electronics and wireless architectures, and delivering the once-in-a-lifetime Cybertruck—all before hitting 30. The icing on the cake was getting to dive back into Model 3 work toward the end."
“This decision wasn’t easy, especially with so much exciting growth on the horizon… I’m confident Tesla will nail its next big mission (especially after last week), and I’m truly excited for the next chapter of my life," he concluded.
