As Uruguay and Saudi Arabia walked out for their FIFA World Cup 2026 Group H match at Miami Stadium on Monday, one player immediately caught fans' attention. Wearing a blue protective face mask, he left many viewers wondering who he was and why he was wearing it.
Who is the player wearing the face mask?
The player wearing the mask was Sebastian Caceres, a 26-year-old centre-back who plays for Mexican club Club América.Caceres made his senior debut for Uruguay in September 2022 and was also part of the squad that finished third at the Copa America 2024. At the 2026 World Cup, he is wearing Uruguay's No. 3 jersey.Before the match, Caceres opened up about fulfilling his childhood dream of playing at the World Cup. The Club America defender revealed that his dream began when he was just four years old, after watching the popular football cartoon Captain Tsubasa, also known as Supercampeones.

Caceres is wearing the protective mask after suffering a serious facial injury while playing for Club América against Pumas UNAM.According to reports, the defender suffered a concussion, a fractured cheekbone, and damage around the eye area during the match.The injury forced him off the field, and he was later hospitalized and treated as part of his recovery.The mask is being used as protection while he continues his return to action.
Has this happened before at the World Cup?
Yes. Protective masks have been seen at previous World Cups as well.During the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Croatia defender Josko Gvardiol and South Korea captain Son Heung-min also wore protective face masks after suffering facial injuries.Now, Sebastian Caceres has joined that list, with his blue mask becoming one of the early talking points of Uruguay's World Cup campaign.
