Chandan Mishra, a convicted gangster serving a life sentence for murder, was shot dead inside a private hospital in Patna on Thursday morning.

Chandan Mishra, a 36-year-old murder convict who was out on parole, was gunned down inside a private hospital in Patna on Thursday. Five armed men stormed into the ICU and opened fire, killing him on the spot, police said.

The accused have been identified and six suspects have been detained from Patna and Buxar. Police believe the killing is linked to a long-running gang rivalry.

A report by the Hindustan Times said he was sentenced to death for the 2011 murder of trader Rajendra Keshri, Chandan Mishra’s punishment was reduced to life imprisonment by the Patna High Court in February 2020.

Serving time at Beur Central Jail, Chandan had been granted a 15-day parole for medical treatment which was due to end on July 18. But on Thursday, his criminal past and his rival caught up with him, even though he gave the noose a slip.

The armed men stormed Paras Hospital in Patna’s Shastri Nagar area, barged into his private room and opened fire before fleeing. The daylight shooting sparked panic in the hospital and sparked concerns regarding safety and security in Bihar’s capital city.

Patna SSP Kartikey K Sharma told media that several bullet casings weee found inside the room where Mishra was being treated. “Chandan Mishra, who was on parole, was admitted to Paras Hospital for treatment. He was shot by unidentified assailants inside the hospital. Prima facie, it seems to be an instance of targeted killing and was carried out after recce," he said.
