When McPherson College announced a $500 million gift from an anonymous donor, even veteran higher-education observers were surprised.According to the McPherson College Catalogs, the private liberal arts college is situated in McPherson, Kansas, a city of about 13,000 in central Kansas; it is not an Ivy League university, a major research institution, or a household name.

But, in November 2022, it had a starring role in one of philanthropy's biggest stories in American higher education.According to McPherson College, the donor's estate commitment was the largest single gift commitment ever made to a small liberal arts college in the United States. The announcement immediately raised a question: what happens when a college accustomed to thinking in millions must now think in hundreds of millions? Not just a big checkThe gift commitment was extraordinary for its size, but more noteworthy for its structure. The unnamed donor did not simply hand over the sum of money; it also came with a challenge. McPherson College reported that the donor would contribute two dollars for every dollar given by others, up to $500 million; the college had to raise $250 million to trigger the full match, resulting in $750 million total to the endowment. The gift, therefore, was not just about financial support, but about raising more funds. It gave the college a unique opportunity to attract potential donors, including alumni, philanthropists, and foundations, because with every gift, more money from the anonymous donor would flow into the institution.

It seems to have worked for the college, which has reported tremendous engagement so far in its campaign to achieve this bold goal that many would not have associated with a college of its size before the announcement.Student loan debt becomes the central issueThe announcement of the donation came at a time when colleges across the country are engaged in discussions about affordability, especially regarding student debt, which continues to be the largest obstacle many American graduates face in overcoming financial insecurity.

Reports indicated that the weight of student loan debt influences many decisions, including career path, family size and housing ownership. Before this landmark commitment to the college in November 2022, McPherson had already undertaken efforts to address the issue through the creation of what it calls the Student Debt Project, a program that helps students graduate from McPherson with significantly less loan debt.

The Student Debt Project offers students access to employment opportunities and mentorship, financial literacy, and matching contributions toward debt payments and savings. The new commitment from the anonymous donor effectively gives the college the funds to realise goals it has already prioritised. For potential students and families, the donation may be even more meaningful than the amount itself, because a half-billion-dollar gift is certainly exciting, but eliminating the burden of student loan debt will have a tangible impact on lives.

Small campus, much bigger aspirationsThe donation also indicated the magnitude of McPherson's aspirations: future plans for the college include development of the Kansas Center for Rural & Community Health Science and the National Center for the Future of Engineering, Design & Mobility. These goals are meant to give McPherson a clear specialty in a crowded higher-education market rather than compete head-on with larger universities. In higher education, smaller schools increasingly need a clear niche and identity, and this gift gives McPherson a chance to build its profile on a much larger scale.
