Lightning strikes are increasing sharply across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana this year, leading to multiple deaths during the April-May storm season. Recently, four MGNREGA workers died after being struck by lightning in Geddavalasa village of Vizianagaram district. Such incidents are tragic, but they also highlight a growing climate threat. Reports suggest lightning strikes in India have increased by nearly 400% over the past six years. According to studies, every 1-degree Celsius rise in temperature could increase lightning activity by 8% to 10%.
