During the rainy season, large stones often tumble down from the mountains, causing fear and concern among local residents. Yet, these falling stones have long been surrounded by ancient beliefs and legends, passed down through generations.
Kanchan Negi, a resident of Uttarakhand, explains that cattle drivers, when taking their animals to the forests for grazing, often encounter fog and mist during rainy and winter days, obscuring their paths. To navigate their return to the village, they place flat stones on rocks to mark the way and avoid getting lost.
Kanchan shares that mountain dwellers revere nature as a deity and show their gratitude by building small monuments. While traversing mountain roads, travellers frequently notice small heaps of stones stacked atop one another. These are not mere playthings for children; there are significant reasons behind their placement.
When cattle herders venture into the mountain forests, fog can disorient them. To prevent losing their way, stone heaps serve as route markers and also ensure a safe journey. These stones are seen as blessings from the gods, seeking protection and guidance.
Prayer For Protection From Departed Souls
Faith associated with mountain stones is profound. According to local beliefs, these heaps are dedicated to area deities such as Bhumiyaal Devta. By placing these stones, people demonstrate their devotion to these gods.
In some areas, stones are considered symbols of departed souls, and their placement is believed to bring peace to these souls and safeguard travellers. Additionally, special types of stones are worn as talismans and rings, believed to ward off evil forces and bring good fortune.
Other Key Reasons
In many mountain regions, stones naturally forming the shape of Shivlinga are found and worshipped as symbols of Lord Shiva. Various stones dedicated to numerous gods and goddesses are also venerated. Many people have piled stones near Kedarnath Dham in hope of fulfilling their wishes from Baba Bholenath. Some even believe that these stone heaps are made with the vow of building a house.
