Trinamool Congress MLA Madan Mitra sparked a controversy by suggesting that the Kolkata law student gang-rape victim bears some responsibility for the incident, saying that it would never have happened if she hadn’t gone to the scene of the crime in the first place.

Trinamool Congress condemned his statement. After facing backlash, Mitra issued a clarification and said his statement had been misunderstood.

The TMC acknowledged that Mitra is associated with the party’s student wing, while also distancing itself from him and calling for strict punishment. The BJP has shared photos of him with senior Trinamool leader and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee as well as state Health Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya.
