Why do Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson still live together — even after three decades of being divorced?

Imagine living with your former spouse, even after three decades of being divorced!Sees unreal, but that’s the reality for the “disgraced” royals — Prince Andrew and his ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, formerly the Duke and Duchess of York!Despite being legally divorced for nearly 30 years, the former couple continues to live together in the same residence on the estate of Royal Lodge in Windsor.

Although their residential address might change soon, since there’s an ongoing row between the Royals and them regarding the evacuation of the Royal Lodge in Windsor, one particular arrangement is still confusing people — their “shared life.

As of now, Andrew and Sarah’s divorced life is thrice the period of their marital bliss — the couple stayed married for less than a decade, and yet, after three decades of being divorced, they continue to keep up with their “cohabitation” arrangement! But why?

One “big, fat, happy” family!

Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson tied the knot in 1986 — and on their wedding day, the late Queen, Elizabeth, made Andrew Duke of York, Earl of Inverness, and Baron Killyleagh.

Their two daughters, Princess Beatrice and Eugenie, were born in 1988 and 1990, respectively, and the couple separated two years later, in 1992.Four more years later, in 1996, Prince Andrew and Sarah finalized their divorce.

Now, although Andrew’s frequent travel plans due to his military career kept him away from Sarah, and infidelity crept in in their marriage eventually, the couple always maintained a united outward appearance, even during the late 1980s. Even after parting ways, the former couple has remained cordial with each other, upholding their “family picture” with their two daughters! But Andy and Fegie never really “parted” their ways!

Inside the “cohabitation” arrangements

Despite their separation over three decades back, followed by the official divorce, the former couple has been living at the Royal Lodge on the Windsor estate (the large, Grade-II-listed residence leased by Andrew) — with Ferguson moving in after she left her previous residence following a fire at that home.

But why living together, still? Now, there might be an array of reasons behind their “special” living arrangement.Prince Andrew holds a 75-year lease on Royal Lodge via the Crown Estate, reportedly at a “peppercorn” (nominal) rent, which gives the arrangement strong legal stability and financial viability. Had it been Sarah living separately and independently, that’d have been an added financial responsibility.

But at the Royal Lodge, she lives rent-free — she possibly has access to all the benefits, and the status of being still connected to the royal family.

Moreover, the former couple shares two daughters (Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie) and appears to place a premium on being united as co-parents — something Ferguson herself has emphasized. This cohabitation provides practical continuity for the family dynamic and grandchildren's visits, even! What’s more? The exes remain on friendly terms! In fact, Ferguson has described their relationship as “divorced to each other, not from each other.”

In this scenario, living together allows the pair to project a united front — “the Yorks are a united family”, as Sarah has put it — and preserve certain routines such as shared tea time. While the setup surely seems unconventional, it seems to operate as a practical arrangement that suits their unique circumstances rather than a typical romantic reconciliation.

What happens now

Andrew and Sarah’s arrangement — post-divorce — has often been tagged as the relationship of convenience where one party enjoys the perks of the other’s titles and status.

Thus, the living-together setup has so far helped them maintain a family unit, preserve lifestyle standards, and co-parent in a single household — even if their marriage was long concluded.

However, recent reports suggest that their living situation may soon change.Prince Andrew has already relinquished his royal titles — thanks to the continued backlash from the Epstein scandal, allegations made by the late Virginia Giuffrethe in her memoir, and scrutiny from both the royal circle and the public.

However, even after mounting pressure, the “disgraced” Prince is reportedly in advanced talks to choose a good enough option, if he truly has to vacate the Royal Lodge. In that case, he reportedly wishes to move to another residence on the estate — potentially Frogmore Cottage (former home of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle). On the other hand, Fergie might take this opportunity to place her demands as well. As per reports, she wishes to relocate to the nearby Adelaide Cottage after William and Kate Middleton move out next month.

Both these cottages are still within the Windsor estate but are rather more modest residential options. If this move is confirmed, it would mark the first time in decades that they have lived truly apart, signaling that their previous co-residence may be coming to an end. Will they be able to keep up with the one “big, fat, happy” family image after withstanding a rollercoaster this year?
