New pieces of the conundrum relating to Raja Raghuvanshi’s murder seem to be falling back into place, as an audio call, purportedly between the accused wife, Sonam, and her mother-in-law, has surfaced on social media.

The purported audio call was the last time Sonam spoke with her in-laws before the couple went missing on May 23, and a search for them was launched by the police, which led to the recovery of Raja’s body on June 2 and her subsequent arrest in the wee hours of June 9.

The alleged conversation appears to have taken place while the newlywed couple was trekking to a steep peak to watch the scenic waterfall in the high reaches of Meghalaya. However, the authenticity of the audio call could not be independently verified.

What Did Sonam Say To Mother-In-Law On Last Call?

The call recording began with Raja’s mother, Uma Raghuvanshi, asking why her son’s mobile phone was switched off, to which Sonam replied in negative and said that they were climbing a steep peak and would call back once they reached their destination.

Upon hearing Sonam panting, Uma questioned the need to undertake such an adventure, to which the daughter-in-law said that the hills offered breathtaking and unmatched scenery.

The flow of the conversation looked normal, like in a daily interaction with one another, however, the mother-daughter talks did not give away the sinister plot that would have led to the end of 29-year-old Raja Raghuvanshi. The Meghalaya Police have said that Sonam is the prime accused in the murder case, and it was she who had hired three assailants to kill her husband while honeymooning in Meghalaya.

Uma seemed to have made the call to Sonam, immediately after which she asked if Raja’s phone had started working, which suggested that she was attempting to dial on his number, but could not connect.

“We are climbing at this moment. We will call back once we reach the top," Sonam responded.

Going by the alleged conversation in which Raja did not appear on the call, it is unclear if he was alive or had been killed by the time the call was made.

The police probe may focus on why Raja, whom his mother tried to reach out to on the call, did not appear for a brief conversation with her.

Raja’s mother also brought up Sonam’s fast on the call and asked if she was still keeping it. The accused said that she did keep the fast and would not eat while on the move. Uma then told her to consume something that is allowed during fasting, to which Sonam said that they were trekking and finding anything to eat in the forest would not be possible.

Sonam told Uma the reason behind her deep breath, claiming it was a “tough trek" in the dense forest.

“Why did you go there? Could you not watch the view without climbing?" the mother asked. “We went to see a waterfall," Sonam replied.

This was supposedly the last conversation between Sonam and any of Raja’s family members before she “went underground" and appeared in the early hours of June 9 in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghazipur, after which she was taken into custody.

Four people have so far been arrested in the murder case, including Sonam’s alleged boyfriend Raj Kushwaha from Indore, Vishal Chauhan from Indore, Akash Rajput from Lalitpur, and Anand from Sagar District.
