‘Why Is She Here’: Canara Bank Staff Confronted For Not Understanding Kannada In Viral Video

A video of a Canara Bank official has gone viral in which a customer is confronting her over in alleged inability to assist in Kannada.

Amid recurrent debates over the use of local language in public services, a video has gone viral purportedly showing a Canara Bank employee being unable to interact with the customers in Kannada in Karnataka’s Chikkamagaluru.

The video, seemingly shot by the customer, shows a confrontation between a Kannada-speaking woman and a bank official over the latter’s inability to help her in the local language.

What’s There In Viral Video?

The woman in the video claimed that she did not know English and questioned the staff member who spoke Malayalam at the bank.

“Why is she here if she can’t understand Kannada?" the customer was heard saying in the video, Hindustan Times reported.

The manager is seen talking to another official in Malayalam, while the customer keeps asking for an explanation about the money taken from her account without any warning.

“She wasn’t even cordial with me. When I tried asking, she started making weird faces," the woman further said.

The bank official who attempted to intervene and cool the situation down, said, “You were not cordial either", HT reported.

Netizens React To Viral Video

As the video went viral on social media, conflicting opinions were shared by the users. While some stood with the customer and backed her demand, others accused her of doing all this for attention online.

“What do you want, information or a viral video?" a user said.

“Someone is already assisting her in Kannada. What’s the problem then?" another one said.

“But someone is assisting and speaking to her in Kannada and giving her the INFO right….What do you need INFORMATION or just create ruckus and make an issue out of nothing??? Goal doesn’t seem to be to do banking business but to make a video," a user wrote.

On the contrary, several users also supported the woman, while questioning the bank’s services, including its hiring process.

“As customers, we expect to be served respectfully and in a language we’re comfortable with. After all, it’s our money that keeps the bank running. Public sector banks like Canara Bank were nationalised to serve all citizens, not just a few," a netizen opined.

“I support Kannadigas," another one wrote.

“Why are locals not being given job opportunity," a user questioned.
