If Kharg is the centre of Iran's oil-export network, controlling or disabling it would strike at one of Tehran's most important sources of revenue

Since the 1960s, Kharg has become the backbone of Iran’s energy exports and a key link between Iranian oil fields and global markets. (X)
A little-known island off Iran’s southern coast has found itself at the centre of a global geopolitical storm once again. The reason is US President Donald Trump.
Speaking amid escalating tensions with Tehran, Trump warned that the United States could seize control of Iran’s key oil-export infrastructure, including Kharg Island, and said Iran would be hit “very hard" if the confrontation continued. The remarks have triggered fresh concerns about energy security, military escalation and the future of the Gulf region.
But why does Kharg Island matter so much? News18 takes a look
What Is Kharg Island?
Kharg Island is a small Iranian island in the Persian Gulf, located about 25 kilometres off the country’s southwestern coast.
Despite its modest size, it plays an outsized role in Iran’s economy. The island serves as the country’s principal oil export terminal and handles the overwhelming majority of Iran’s crude exports.
Oil produced in major Iranian fields is transported via pipelines to Kharg, where it is stored and loaded onto tankers destined for international markets. Analysts cited by CNN describe the island as the backbone of Iran’s petroleum export system.
The island’s importance stems largely from geography. Its deep-water facilities can accommodate some of the world’s largest oil tankers, making it significantly more valuable than many alternative export points along Iran’s coast.
Why Is Trump Targeting It?
Trump’s logic appears straightforward: if Kharg is the centre of Iran’s oil-export network, controlling or disabling it would strike at one of Tehran’s most important sources of revenue.
Trump, in his latest directive, suggested that taking control of Kharg and other oil infrastructure could dramatically increase pressure on Iran.
According to Financial Times, targeting Kharg would go far beyond previous US military actions against Iran because it would directly affect the country’s ability to sell oil abroad. That is why many analysts view the threat as one of the most consequential statements made by Trump since the current crisis began.
Why Is Kharg So Critical To Iran?
For Iran, Kharg is much more than an island. It is an economic lifeline.
According to CNN, the vast majority of Iranian crude exports pass through the facility before reaching buyers, particularly in Asia. Even under years of Western sanctions, oil sales have remained a crucial source of revenue for Tehran.
The BBC noted that Kharg’s strategic significance is not a recent phenomenon. During the Iran-Iraq War in the 1980s, Iraqi forces repeatedly targeted the island in an effort to cripple Iran’s economy. Despite sustaining heavy damage, the facility remained operational and continued to play a central role in Iranian oil exports.
That wartime history offers a clue to why the island remains so important today.
Any disruption at Kharg would immediately affect Iran’s export capacity and could deprive the government of billions of dollars in revenue.
Could the US Actually Seize It?
Military experts are far less certain.
According to Reuters, taking control of Kharg would be significantly more complicated than simply launching air strikes.
The island lies close to the Iranian mainland and remains within range of Iranian missiles, drones and naval forces. Analysts quoted by Reuters warned that any American force stationed there would face constant threats and could require substantial military protection.
The Financial Times similarly reported that occupying the island could drag the US into a prolonged military commitment, with Iranian forces likely to challenge any attempt at long-term control.
In other words, capturing Kharg may be easier than holding it.
Why The World Is Paying Attention
The implications extend far beyond Iran and the United States.
Kharg sits at the heart of one of the world’s most important energy corridors. Any disruption to operations on the island could affect global oil supplies and trigger volatility in international energy markets.
The threat also intersects with concerns about the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow waterway through which roughly a fifth of global oil trade passes. If tensions around Kharg escalate, analysts fear the crisis could spill into broader shipping routes across the Gulf, raising the risk of a wider regional confrontation.
A Small Island With Global Importance
Kharg Island rarely makes international headlines. Yet it has long occupied a central place in Iran’s economic and strategic calculations. That is why Trump’s threat has attracted such attention.
The battle for Kharg is not merely a dispute over a remote island. It is a confrontation over one of the most important pieces of energy infrastructure in the Middle East.
For Iran, Kharg is the gateway through which much of its oil reaches the world. For Washington, it is a pressure point that could be used to squeeze Tehran’s economy. And for global markets, it is a critical node whose fate could influence oil prices, shipping routes and regional stability.
