Elon Musk-owned artificial intelligence (AI) startup xAI’s Grokipedia is now available for users. The AI-powered encyclopedia, which went live with 885,000 AI-generated articles, is seen as a rival to Wikipedia, a platform which Musk has criticised for having “editorial bias.” Meanwhile, Wikipedia’s co-founder, Larry Sanger, who has been extensively using Grokipedia since its launch, has shared his views on the AI-powered encyclopedia on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter). In one of his posts, Sanger warned that Grokipedia could threaten Wikipedia’s relevance unless the company that he left in 2002 adopts his proposed reforms. However, when another X user highlighted Sanger’s warning, Musk dismissed it, noting that it had been only a few days since the xAI project's version 0.1 was launched in beta.It started when Sanger shared a link to his nine theses, which advocate structural changes such as public leader identification and competing articles per viewpoint, drawing on his long-standing critiques to foster a decentralised "Encyclosphere" for global knowledge sharing. He wrote: “Wikipedia, in light of a strong launch from Grokipedia, you’d better get your house in order—or you’ll go the way of the Sears catalogue. Are you listening yet?”Sanger’s original post didn’t get a reply from Musk. However, when another X user named SMX reposted Sanger’s warning, Musk responded saying: “He should calm down, this is day three of the v0.1 launch.”

What Wikipedia founder said on Grokipedia’s launch

Earlier this week, when Musk announced Grokipedia on X, Sanger replied to his post, sharing his initial impressions on the new AI-based encyclopedia. While launching Grokipedia, Musk shared a link to the web version of the AI-powered service and wrote on X: “Grokipedia.com version 0.1 is now live. Version 1.0 will be 10X better, but even at 0.1 it’s better than Wikipedia imo (in my opinion)”Replying to this, Sanger said: “My initial impression, looking at my own article and poking around here and there, is that Grokipedia is very OK. The jury's still out as to whether it's actually better than Wikipedia. But at this point, I would have to say "maybe"!”
