Will Brock Purdy play in Week 9 against the New York Giants? Latest injury update on the San Francisco 49ers quarterback

Brock Purdy latest injury update.

San Francisco 49ers fans face more quarterback uncertainty this week. Starting quarterback Brock Purdy is still recovering from a toe injury he suffered in Week 1 against the Seattle Seahawks.

He briefly returned for a start in Week 4 against the Jacksonville Jaguars but reinjured the toe and will miss the team’s upcoming game at the New York Giants. In his place, former first-round pick Mac Jones has taken over and helped the 49ers stay competitive with a 5-3 record, despite injuries to key players. Defensive stars Nick Bosa and Fred Warner are out for the season, and All-Pro tight end George Kittle and young wide receiver Ricky Pearsall have missed multiple games.

After last week’s loss to the Houston Texans, San Francisco sits behind the Los Angeles Rams and Seattle Seahawks in the NFC West, making Sunday’s road game at MetLife Stadium especially important.

Brock Purdy remains questionable but won’t start in Week 9

Reports indicate Brock Purdy will not take the field against the Giants. Mac Jones is expected to start, with backup Adrian Martinez also available. Coach Kyle Shanahan left the door open, saying Purdy could play if absolutely necessary.

Being listed as “questionable” is an improvement from his previous “out” status, signaling some progress in his recovery. The 49ers will also keep a close eye on the condition of MetLife Stadium’s turf, following concerns raised by other players earlier this season.

NFL analyst Ian Rapoport noted, “The turf at MetLife Stadium played a part in (Carter’s) decision,” referencing a similar precaution taken by the Eagles.

San Francisco is targeting Week 10 at home against the Los Angeles Rams as a potential opportunity for Purdy to return.

49ers quarterback lineup and backups

San Francisco’s current quarterback depth chart:

  • Brock Purdy (injured)
  • Mac Jones
  • Adrian Martinez
  • Kurtis Rourke (non-football injury list)

Jones participated fully in practice despite a minor knee issue, while Martinez has not seen game action this season after joining the practice squad. Rourke is not expected to play this season.

Giants matchup puts pressure on 49ers’ offense

With Purdy out, Mac Jones takes on a pivotal role in the 49ers’ offense as the team looks to stay competitive in the NFC West. The matchup at the New York Giants comes during a stretch where San Francisco has four of six games on the road, including a key Week 10 home game against the Rams. Jones’ performance on Sunday could set the tone for the 49ers’ playoff push.
