Marc-Andre Fleury, one of the greatest goaltenders in the NHL, has a habit of playing pranks since his Pittsburgh days. What if he comes out of retirement? What if he joins an NHL team in dire need of perfect goaltending? What if he never decided to leave the ice hockey rink? Because five NHL teams have already reached out to him.
But Fleury is being specifically linked to one of the teams! Joe Smith of The Athletic reported that Fleury taught the Minnesota Wild how to handle adversity. There’s one NHL team that’s known, felt, and witnessed adversity like no other. Any guesses?
Edmonton Oilers linked to former Pittsburgh Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury
Joe Smith, Senior Writer for The Athletic, gave the following reasons why retired goalie Fleury could return to the runner-up of the 2025 Stanley Cup Finals, the Edmonton Oilers:
- Three and a half seasons with the Minnesota Wild, and Fleury revamped their entire culture
- Fleury raised their level of competitiveness for the good
- He taught them how to deal with adverse situations
Marc-Andre Fleury may assist Stuart Skinner in the Edmonton Oilers
Allan Mitchell of The Athletic also viewed a bright return for the retired goaltender in the form of the Edmonton Oilers. Mitchell also reported that the Edmonton Oilers were looking at Fleury to assist their current goaltender, Stuart Skinner. Other reasons?
- Even though Fleury’s retirement seems final, it may appear to be a lost cause.
- Edmonton doesn’t have a lot of cap space, and Fleury has had too many Stanley Cup wins.
- There may be no desire to continue an outstanding career…but there’s still a story in Edmonton to pursue.
- At times, the desire fades away, the goaltender may retire, but the spark? May return.
