Williams faces challenges with the FW48, with the car set to be potentially 20kg over the minimum weight, causing a one-second-per-lap deficit. Aggressive upgrades are needed.

Williams may have avoided outright disaster, but the warning lights are still flashing.
After missing the Barcelona shakedown, fears around the FW48 spiralled. Two steady test outings in Bahrain helped calm the noise, and the dramatic struggles of Aston Martin F1 Team’s AMR26 shifted attention elsewhere.
But make no mistake: Williams are not where they want to be heading into Melbourne.
Heavy Car, Heavy Cost
Reports suggest the FW48 could be up to 20kg over the 798kg minimum weight: an “extreme case", as per the BBC.
If accurate, that’s potentially a one-second-per-lap deficit before setup even comes into play. In a new regulation era where margins are razor-thin, that’s a brutal handicap.
Reinforcements and last-minute design tweaks reportedly added bulk after early assembly issues.
Midfield, Not Momentum
The buzz around James Vowles and the arrival of Carlos Sainz alongside Alexander Albon once fuelled genuine optimism. A fifth-place finish in 2025 only amplified expectations.
Now? Reality has cooled the hype.
Aerodynamically, the FW48 is understood to lack the sophistication of the front-runners, and even some midfield rivals such as Haas and Alpine are believed to have cleaner, more refined concepts.
Big Fixes, Bigger Risk
Williams’ path forward hinges on aggressive in-season upgrades. But chasing performance mid-year carries its own dangers: cost, correlation issues, and development missteps.
The gap to the front appears to have grown. The midfield has tightened. And Williams may start 2026 further back than where they ended 2025.
The rebuild under Vowles was always about long-term gain over short-term comfort. But the time has now come to prove that the sacrifice was worth the suffering.
