WNBA regular season inches towards the end with Seattle Storm and Los Angeles Sparks battling for last Playoff spot

Unlike the NBA, where the top 10 teams from both conferences advance to the Playoffs, things in the WNBA are a little different. With a much smaller number of teams in play, as well as uneven distribution, the top eight teams with the highest winning percentage, regardless of conference, are set to qualify for the Playoffs this season.

The regular season is set to conclude this coming Thursday, on September 11, while the Playoff season begins on September 14. So far, a handful of teams have already cemented their place in the next phase, but some are still battling it out to clinch a spot. The Seattle Storm and Los Angeles Sparks are the teams with the highest possibility, so let's see who finally finds their place on the board at the end of the regular season.

How WNBA Playoff standing looks so far

The Minnesota Lynx have clinched the top spot in the WNBA playoffs, securing home-court advantage throughout the postseason. Meanwhile, the reigning champion New York Liberty is set to enter the playoffs as the No. 5 seed. Several teams have already secured their playoff spots so far, however, the landscape is still uncertain for other teams, with only one postseason berth remaining undecided.

  • Minnesota Lynx(33-9): Clinched playoff berth
  • Las Vegas Aces(28-14): Clinched playoff berth
  • Atlanta Dream(28-14): Clinched playoff berth
  • Phoenix Mercury(27-15): Clinched playoff berth
  • New York Liberty(25-17): Clinched playoff berth
  • Golden State Valkyries(23-19): Clinched playoff berth
  • Indiana Fever(23-20): Clinched playoff spot

The battle for the final spot is heating up, with the Seattle Storm and Los Angeles Sparks still in contention.

The Sparks need a strong finish to avoid missing the playoffs for the fifth consecutive year, and have managed to keep the fans' hopes up by securing a win against a desolate Dallas Wings. The playoffs are set to begin on September 14, with the Finals scheduled to conclude by October 19.

WNBA Playoffs this season will be exciting

For the first time, the 2025 WNBA Finals will expand to a best-of-seven series, moving away from the best-of-five format. The Minnesota Lynx are the top seed going into the playoffs and have secured home-court advantage, given that the higher seed is set to host the first, second, fifth, and seventh games in the postseason.

The Last Vegas Aces have also managed a miracle this season, with 14 straight wins, climbing to the #2 spot, and becoming the second team to clinch a playoff berth after the Lynx.

The Golden State Valkyries, on the other hand, have made history this season. They have managed to secure a Playoff spot in their inaugural season, becoming the first expansion team ever to do so in the WNBA. As for the Seattle Storm and Los Angeles Sparks, who are cinching for the last spot, it will be a difficult battle for both teams to find their place in the postseason.
