A woman from Noida, who has accused Haryanvi folk singer Uttar Kumar of rape more than two months ago, attempted self-immolation near Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s official residence in Lucknow on Friday, citing police inaction in her case.

According to officials, the woman was stopped just in time by security personnel stationed outside the chief minister’s residence.

She was handed over to Gautampalli police, who later informed the police in Ghaziabad, where her alleged rape case is filed, about the incident.

The woman had filed a complaint on June 24 at Shalimar Garden police station in Ghaziabad, accusing Uttar Kumar of sexual assault.

However, the case was reportedly registered only after nearly 25 days, following directions from the High Court. Despite this, the woman alleged that no further progress had been made.

She claimed to have repeatedly informed police about the whereabouts of the accused, but no action was taken.

Frustrated with the delays, she travelled to Lucknow and attempted self-immolation as a form of protest.

Prior to the incident, the woman had also posted on social media, warning that she would take such an extreme step outside the chief minister’s residence if authorities failed to act.

Officials said the quick response of security personnel prevented a tragedy.

The woman has been taken into custody for questioning, and her statement is being recorded, police said.

The incident has once again raised questions over delays in handling sensitive cases and the accountability of police in following up on complaints of sexual violence.

The state police have not yet issued an official statement regarding the status of the case or action against the accused.
