Woman detained on charges of killing infant in TripuraThe mother is currently being questioned in connection with the infant’s death in Rampadapara village.

The Tripura Police detained a woman Sunday for allegedly killing her five-month-old daughter in Sepahijala district’s Sonamura region in a bid to pursue an extramarital affair.

Officers said Suchitra Debbarma, who is believed to be aged between 25 and 30 years, is currently being questioned in connection with the infant’s death in Rampadapara village which falls under the administration of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC).

“We registered a case following a complaint lodged by the deceased baby’s grandfather. We have detained the woman,” said an officer at the police station in Sonamura.

The police said the infant died while the woman’s husband, Amit Debbarma, was away from home, working at a rubber plantation. Officers rushed to the suspect’s house on being informed about the matter, and found the body of the infant on a bed. It was later taken to a local hospital in Sonamura for post-mortem, which is expected to be conducted on Monday.

The officer said an investigation is on to determine what caused the baby’s death. “If any other person is found to be involved in this incident, legal action will be taken against them,” he added.
