A 34-year-old woman, working as a sweeper with the Meerpet Municipal Corporation, has been arrested for allegedly killing her husband by strangulation at their home in Pragathi Nagar Colony, Jillelaguda, following frequent quarrels over her fidelity.
The accused, Alampally Sandhya, allegedly murdered her 42-yearr-old husband Alampally Vijay Kumar, an auto driver, in the early hours of October 20.
According to the Inspector of Meerpet police N. Shankar Kumar, Vijay often accused her of having an illicit relationship with a co-worker named Jeevan and regularly abused and assaulted her.
Meerpet police initially registered a case of suspicious death after Vijay Kumar was found dead under mysterious circumstances. “The autopsy revealed a ligature mark around the neck, raising suspicion of strangulation. During the probe, Vijay Kumar’s brother, Alampally Vijay Bhaskar, approached us on October 26 and reported that Sandhya had confessed to killing her husband,” said the officer.
Following her confession, police altered the case to murder and destruction of evidence under Sections 103(1) and 238 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. During interrogation, Sandhya told investigators that her husband returned home drunk on the night of October 19, abused and assaulted her, and threatened to take his life. In a fit of rage, she strangulated him first with a scarf and then with a rope to ensure his death.
“She later misled her family, claiming that her husband was found unconscious near the bathroom, and rushed him to hospital, where doctors declared him dead,” added the officer.
Police recovered the rope and scarf used in the crime from her house. Sandhya was arrested on October 27 and remanded to 14 days of judicial custody. Further investigation is underway.
