Woman hurt by elephant herd in Ramgarh, dies on way to hospital

Ramgarh: A 30-year-old woman died of injuries after being attacked by a herd of elephants at a village in Mandu block of the district late on Wednesday night. The incident took place at Parsabera village, local forest officials said on Thursday.

Ramgarh divisional forest officer Nitish Kumar said the herd had ventured into the village in search of food. The deceased, identified as Sahita Devi, was sleeping in the open when one of the elephants picked up with its trunk and tossed her away. “Critically injured, Sahita was being taken to a hospital when she died on the way,” Kumar said.A herd of 42 jumbos has been seen roaming in forests spanning Ramgarh and Bokaro districts. A group from the herd, officials said, ventured into the village. “A quick response team has been tracking the movement of the herd,” another official said. Meanwhile, Kumar said Sahita’s kin were provided Rs 20,000 as an immediate compensation while the remaining amount of Rs 3.8 lakh would be paid after documentation.
