The Centre has asked all States and Union Territories to create a structured system to ensure that former Agniveers are employed by private security agencies and training institutes, officials said on Tuesday.
In a recent communication, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) directed the authorities responsible for the Private Security Agencies Regulation Act (PSARA) to promote the hiring of ex-Agniveers, noting their valuable experience in the armed forces.
Launched in June 2022, the Agnipath scheme was designed to bring younger recruits into the Army, Navy and Air Force. Under the plan, candidates aged between 17-and-a-half and 21 years serve for four years, with 25 per cent retained for longer terms of up to 15 years. The first batch of Agniveers will complete their tenure next year.
According to the MHA letter dated September 11, States have been told to “work out a system" for the absorption of Agniveers by private security providers engaged by government departments, banks and other organisations.
The Police-II Division of the ministry also advised that “considering the huge recruitment in the security agencies, the top 10 security provider agencies may be sensitised to absorb Agniveers."
Citing Section 10(3) of the PSARA, the letter reminded States that ex-servicemen are to be given preference for employment in private security roles. It further emphasised that Agniveers, having served four years in the armed forces, possess the discipline and skills suited to such work.
Earlier this year, the government had tasked the Home Ministry with coordinating the post-service transition of Agniveers. It also reserved 10 per cent of vacancies for them in the Central Armed Police Forces and Assam Rifles, along with age relaxations and exemptions from physical tests.
Several States, including Haryana and Rajasthan, have already announced job reservations for ex-Agniveers in their police forces, while various central agencies have also pledged recruitment opportunities.
