With floodwaters inundating low-lying regions in western Kottayam, the Irrigation department has initiated efforts to restore the natural flow of Meenachil River.

Irrigation Minister Roshy Augustine has directed the Executive Engineer of Kottayam Major Irrigation to take immediate steps to remove blockages affecting water flow beneath bridges at Thazhathangady and Illikkal, located in the Thiruvarppu grama panchayat. The obstruction, caused by garbage accumulation during recent heavy rains, has led to water overflowing into riverbanks.

The panchayat administrative committee had earlier passed a resolution seeking the Minister’s intervention. Acting swiftly, Minister Augustine instructed officials to clear debris without delay.

During a similar flood situation last year, the Minister had personally led a team of officials to clear waste and ensure the smooth flow of the river.
