FIDE has officially opened the bidding process to host the next World Chess Championship match between reigning champion D Gukesh and challenger Javokhir Sindarov.

According to the governing body, the marquee encounter is provisionally scheduled for November 23 to December 17, 2026.

The championship is expected to run for 25 days, with final regulations set to be approved by July 1. Interested hosts must submit a signed bid form to the FIDE Secretariat by May 31, 2026, although the organisation has left open the option of extending the deadline if required. The bidding process is expected to attract significant global interest, given the historic nature of the upcoming contest.

D Gukesh Vs Javokhir Sindarov

D Gukesh enters the match as the reigning world champion after his landmark victory over Ding Liren in 2024, which made him the youngest title-holder in history. Sindarov, meanwhile, secured his place by dominating the Candidates tournament, setting up a compelling showdown between two of the brightest young stars in the game.

Despite his historic triumph, Gukesh has endured a dip in form since 2025, struggling to replicate the consistency that brought him the crown. This adds an extra layer of intrigue heading into the contest.

The 2026 edition will determine who will rule the chess world for the next two years: the reigning world champion, Gukesh D of India, or the challenger, Javokhir Sindarov of Uzbekistan. This upcoming clash will be the youngest-ever chess world championship match, as both Gukesh and Sindarov will be 20 when it begins.

The previous championship match between Gukesh and Ding was staged in Singapore, which beat bids from Chennai and New Delhi. Hosted at Resorts World Sentosa, the event set a high benchmark, raising expectations for the 2026 edition.
