Ongoing desilting work across various canals in Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts were inspected on Saturday by J. Jayakanthan, Secretary, Water Resources Department (WRD).
According to WRD sources, 162 desilting work covering 1,327 km are being undertaken in Tiruvarur at a cost of ₹17 crore. Nearly 92% of the work had been completed, with the remaining work scheduled for completion in the coming days.
In Nagapattinam, 54 desilting work covering 430 km are under way at an estimated cost of ₹5.73 crore with similar progress reported.
During the inspection, Mr. Jayakanthan reviewed work in several key channels, including Ayyanar, Maruthur, Thiruthuraipoondi, Ekkal, Kunnanallur Ranjan, Thagattur Pumping Station, and Nachikulam channels.
Responding to farmers’ requests during the field visit, he instructed the officials to clear water hyacinth in Mulliyaru and Manamkondanaru rivers in Vedaranyam and Marakka Koraiyaru in Tiruvarur district.
During the inspection R. Dhayalakumar, Chief Engineer, WRD, Tiruchi Region, Shanmugam, Superintending Engineer, and M.G. Rajendran, Executive Engineer, Tiruvarur, were present.
