US billionaire Elon Musk on Monday sparked a fresh online debate after posting on X that the “Straits of Hormuz are named after Ahura Mazda from Zoroastrianism," a claim that quickly drew wide reactions.
The Islamic Republic of Iran’s Consulate General in Mumbai responded directly to the post, saying: “History rewards careful reading: Start with #Persian civilisation & start with Strait of #Hormuz… not Strait’s."
In a sharper follow-up, the consulate added: “A good start Elon, but you need more education."
Musk’s post triggered a wave of responses from users debating the historical origins of the waterway’s name. Some users argued that the Strait of Hormuz is linked to the ancient Kingdom of Hormuz rather than the Zoroastrian deity Ahura Mazda, while others pointed to alternative historical references and linguistic interpretations.
