An emotional moment unfolded in Uttarkhand’s Uttarkashi on Friday when a rescued woman pilgrim tore a part of her “dupatta" and tied it like a ’rakhi’ on Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami’s wrist to thank him for taking such good care of the stranded yatris.
The incident took place at Harsil helipad when the woman, identified as Dhangauri Barauliya, a resident of Ishanpur in Ahmedabad, went over to Dhami to express her gratitude for being looked after so well by the state government.
Touched by her warm gesture, Dhami bowed to her with folded hands, saying it was a very "special blessing" for him.
Barauliya had come to Uttarakhand with her family for a pilgrimage to Gangotri. On August 5, a severe natural disaster struck Dharali, leaving them stranded. Landslides and heavy debris flow blocked all access routes, creating an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty.
Soon, immediate relief and rescue operations were launched. The Chief Minister has been personally present in the region for the past three days, overseeing ground-level operations.
Rescuers worked tirelessly to evacuate Dhangauri and her family to safety. For the first time since the calamity struck, those trapped allowed relief to replace the terror in their eyes.
During the on-ground inspection of the affected areas by Dhami, Dhangauri approached the CM in tears and tore the border of her dupatta and tied it around Dhami’s wrist as a rakhi.
While tying the rakhi, she said, as ANI quoted, “For me, you are like Lord Krishna – protecting not just me, but all the mothers and sisters here like a true brother. You have been with us for three days, ensuring our safety and looking after our needs."

Officials said many pilgrims from Gujarat had to return to Gangotri after the flashflood hit Dharali on Tuesday. They were put up at hotels and other lodging facilities there and taken good care of, the officials said, adding that they began to be evacuated in helicopters to Matli and Harsil when the weather improved on Tuesday.
So far, 650 pilgrims have been evacuated since Tuesday, when torrents of mud swallowed homes, hotels and cars.
Officials have said four people were killed in the flash floods. Two bodies were recovered on Wednesday. The Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority (USDMA) said 16 people, including nine Army personnel and seven civilians, are missing.
