In a startling policy turn, US President Donald Trump has hinted that the United States may resume underground nuclear weapons tests, something not done since 1992, stating, “We’re going to do some testing … You’ll find out very soon."
Speaking from aboard Air Force One while en route to a summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Busan, South Korea, Trump told reporters the country cannot continue to “play by old rules" while other nations expand their nuclear arsenals.
Earlier this week, Trump posted on his social-media platform that he had ordered the US military to “start testing our Nuclear Weapons on an equal basis," citing growing threats from China and Russia.
The announcement has stirred global unease. For more than three decades, the US has adhered to a voluntary moratorium on explosive nuclear tests, last conducted in 1992, and signed the Comprehensive Nuclear Test‑Ban Treaty (CTBT) in 1996, though it has not ratified it.
When asked whether the upcoming tests would be full-scale underground detonations, Trump declined to clarify, stating only “We’ll see." US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, speaking in Malaysia, supported the decision as a way to maintain credible deterrence. “Resuming testing is a pretty responsible very responsible way to do that. And I think it makes nuclear conflict less likely," he added.
