Karnataka Deputy DK Shivakumar on Wednesday apologised for the overcrowding at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, which led to a stampede and the deaths of 11 people.

Shivakumar said the crowd was uncontrollable and the police were finding it difficult, so the victory parade for the IPL-winning team, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, had to be stopped. He said crowd was “young and vibrant", so using force was not an option.

“It was young vibrant crowd, we cannot use lathi," Shivakumar said about the tragic incident during a victory parade by the IPL winners, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).

“I have spoken to the police commissioner and everyone. I will also go to the hospital later. I do not want to disturb the doctors who are taking care of the patients. The exact number (of deaths) cannot be told now. We appeal to the people to remain calm. We shortened the programme, which ended within 10 minutes. We are trying to make everything normal…lakhs of people came," he told news agency ANI.
