A 21-year-old youth drowned while bathing in Ayinivayal pond at Azhikode, Kannur, on Sunday (June 15, 2025) morning. It is the seventh drowning incident in the district in the past 15 days.

The deceased was identified as K.T. Ismail, a native of Athengu Kadavu, Matool. He had reportedly gone to the pond with his brother and friends around 10 a.m. and allegedly drowned while swimming.

Following the incident, his friends alerted residents and launched a search. The Fire and Rescue Services, along with the Valapattanam police, also arrived at the scene but were unable to locate him. A scuba diving team from Thalassery was later called in and recovered the body around noon. The water level in the pond was higher than usual due to continuous rainfall since early morning.

Holiday declared
