Youth drowns in Mullaperiyar tunnel

A 17-year-old tribal youth drowned while taking a bath in the Mullaperiyar dam tunnel at Thekkady in Idukki. The deceased has been identified as Arjun, son of Ariyan of the Mannakkudy tribal settlement in Thekkady.

According to police, Arjun and his friends had gone to the Mullaperiyar dam tunnel, through which water is flowing to Tamil Nadu from Thekkady, on Wednesday evening. Later, on Thursday morning, his friends alerted the family that Arjun had gone missing while bathing, after which the police, Fire and Rescue Services personnel, and the Forest department officials began a search for him. On Thursday evening, after the shutters of the tunnel was closed, a scuba team from Thodupuzha recovered Arjun’s body. The body was shifted to Kumily government hospital for post-mortem examination
