Guwahati: Assam Police have arrested a 27-year-old man for circulating a misleading video on social media concerning the death of celebrated artist Zubeen Garg, who passed away last month in Singapore. The accused, identified as Injamul Haque from Nagaon district, was apprehended and presented before a local court on Saturday.According to police, Haque allegedly sought to incite public unrest during a sensitive period following Garg’s death. Swapnaneel Deka, SP (Nagaon), revealed that Haque operated a Facebook page under the alias ‘SK Ahmed,’ where he uploaded the contentious video. “He shared content related to Zubeen Garg’s death that was provocative. In the video, he made speculative and opinionated comments suggesting that Garg was murdered, which appeared to be an attempt to disrupt the state’s law and order and create suspicion among the public.
Since an official investigation is already underway, he had no authority to conduct an independent parallel investigation from himself,” Deka said.During interrogation, Haque confessed to intentionally posting the video to boost his follower count on Facebook. “We have registered a case at the Juria Police Station, and he has been arrested under the relevant sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Act and the Information Technology (IT) Act,” Deka said.
Taking to ‘X’, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said Haque had posted this controversial video himself. “He had stated that he had obtained the original clip from an OTT platform, after which he added inflammatory remarks through editing before posting it,” he added. The Assam Police are actively monitoring the spread of rumours and misinformation on social media, working diligently to remove such content and urging the public to avoid engaging with or disseminating false information.
