The YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) on Monday announced a State-wide campaign to highlight what it called the coalition government’s betrayal of the Backward Classes (BCs), alleging that they had been denied political representation, welfare benefits and constitutional opportunities over the past two years.

Addressing the media, former Minister Ch. Venugopala Krishna, MLC Ramesh Yadav and former MP Margani Bharat said a major BC convention would be held in Vijayawada next month, followed by zonal meetings across the State to expose the government’s alleged failures.

The leaders alleged that Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu had denied the post of Deputy Chief Minister to a BC leader and had failed to fully constitute the BC Corporations by appointing their chairpersons. They said that, in contrast, the previous YSRCP government had constituted 56 BC Corporations in a single phase and provided greater political representation to the backward communities.

They further alleged that the coalition government had failed to fulfil the promises made to BCs in its election manifesto. They also said that while the YSRCP government had sought to provide 34% reservation for BCs in local body elections, the initiative was stalled following legal intervention after the TDP-led coalition came to power.

The YSRCP would intensify its campaign across the State to mount pressure on the coalition government to fulfil its commitments to the BCs, they added.
