The YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) accused the coalition government of neglecting flood-affected families in Vijayawada. They alleged that the victims of the Budameru floods were still awaiting compensation, a year after the disaster.
Speaking to the media on Monday, former Minister Vellampalli Srinivasa Rao criticised the government for failing to take up permanent measures to prevent recurring floods in colonies that are inundated even after moderate rains. The YSRCP would launch an agitation if compensation is not paid soon and flood-prevention works such as desilting Budameru are not initiated immediately, he said.
Mr. Srinivasa Rao alleged that Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu had damaged the brand image of Vijayawada by focusing solely on Amaravati, while neglecting pressing civic issues. “The Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister P. Narayana has been reduced to only a CRDA Minister, leaving colonies to suffer because the silt in Budameru was never cleared,” he alleged.
The former Minister also lashed out at the government for ignoring the plight of people in Vijayawada East, Central, and West constituencies, as well as in Nandigama and Mylavaram, where residents continue to live under the constant threat of Budameru floods.
