Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Tuesday expressed gratitude to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his warm wishes on Ukraine’s Independence Day, observed on August 24. In a post shared on social media platform X, Zelenskyy acknowledged India’s support for peace and dialogue, especially in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.

“Thank you, Prime Minister @narendramodi, for the warm greetings on Ukraine’s Independence Day. We appreciate India’s dedication to peace and dialogue," Zelenskyy wrote. He also shared the message sent by Prime Minister Modi to mark the occasion. “India remains committed to extending all possible support for sincere efforts seeking an early, abiding and peaceful resolution of the conflict through dialogue and diplomacy," Modi’s message read.

In his reply, Zelenskyy thanked the Indian leader for his support and stressed the urgency of ending the war. “We count on India’s contribution. Every decision that strengthens diplomacy leads to better security not only in Europe, but also in the Indo-Pacific and beyond," Zelenskyy stated. He added that the world is watching and hoping for a resolution that restores dignity and ensures lasting peace.

Prime Minister Modi, in his message, also reflected on his visit to Kyiv last August, noting the progress in bilateral relations since then. “I look forward to working with you to further strengthen our mutually beneficial cooperation," he wrote.

The exchange between the two leaders comes at a significant moment, as the Ukraine-India relationship evolves amid geopolitical tensions. Both Modi and Zelenskyy have exchanged words of assurance not only during Ukraine’s Independence Day but also on August 15, when Zelenskyy extended wishes on India’s national holiday.

The Russia-Ukraine war, now entering its fourth year since the 2022 full-scale invasion, shows no clear path to resolution. While US President Donald Trump previously offered to mediate talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Zelenskyy, first individually, then through a proposed trilateral summit, the idea remains speculative.

Last week, during a meeting at the White House, some EU leaders hinted that a direct meeting between Putin and Zelenskyy could take place in the coming two weeks. However, no official confirmation has come from the Kremlin as of yet.
